What is the OBWL?

2 min read

The Online Basketball World League is a fictional simulation basketball league established on May 2nd, 2011.  It initially began using the Jump Shot Pro Basketball and Fast Break College Basketball software engines to create a comprehensive fictional fantasy basketball universe. In 2016 the league switched over to the Fast Break Pro Basketball 3 engine for both the college (OCBL) and professional leagues (OBWL).

Members of the OBWL assume the role of the General Manager of one of the pro league’s 24 teams. General Managers sign free agents, trade players, draft rookies, hire coaches and scouts, and sets their team’s depth charts and game plans over an 80 game regular season and — hopefully — the postseason!  In the end, the last team standing will claim the ultimate prize: The Heikkinen Cup, the league championship trophy. There can be only one championship team each season, and we a league full of competitive GMs going all the way will not be easy!

The software the OBWL runs on is a management simulation, not a video game like the NBA 2K franchise. The league is a fairly realistic simulation of the NBA’s real world CBA rules (contracts, salary cap, luxury tax, etc.) circa 2011.  Those were the most current rules at the time the software was published. You are basically the coach, owner, and general manager all in one!

The OBWL is NOT an NBA historical simulation league. The players and teams are entirely fictional, generated initially as college players in our college simulation, the OCBL, and then drafted into the OBWL pro league. Our GMs prefer fictional players because it allows you to test your management skills and write your own story instead of just riding the coat tails of a Michael Jordan, LeBron James, or Shaquille O’Neal. Or, like in some crazy sim leagues, all three at the same time…
